Hide notifications from backlogs

Say, a channel you re-joined served up the past 20 messages/lines and you/the user was mentioned in it. Scripts, including this one, will immediately pop up a notification. Short of using fset command to somehow stop weechat from fetching the previous messages, is there a way to stop notifying about older ones?

I know this is a niche issue and probably there is a Python command that tests this and if inserted into the script, would theoretically work. I tried myself but had no luck.

Hi, I do not have a clear answer, but let me at least provide a couple of remarks:

• If we are really talking about WeeChat's backlog, then I do not seem to be receiving notifications from entries in the backlog 🤔. For example, when someone notifies me in a channel, I quit WeeChat, start it, connect to the IRC network, join the channel, and I only see the backlog printed (ended with ========== End of backlog (20 lines) ==========), i.e. I do not receive any notification for that mention in the backlog. Are the notifications that you see really from the backlog?
• I receive notifications from buffer playback (starts with Buffer Playback... and ends with Playback Complete.), but those are produced by znc (IRC bouncer that I am using). Maybe you are using an IRC bouncer as well?
• Unfortunately, I was unable to find a way of figuring out the time when a message was originally posted. The only time that is available to scripts (such as this one) is the time when a message is shown/printed.
• If the notifications that you receive are really from the backlog and you do not necessarily need the backlog, as a workaround, you can disable it by setting logger.look.backlog to 0 (the default value is 20).

I will keep this issue open in case some else has some ideas 🙂.

In this case, I think it is some specific channels which automatically replay the last X lines and if one is mentioned in there, then a notification appears. It's not really a backlog as in the activity didn't necessarily happen when user was online. I think the following is happening: I am in a channel, I am notified in a conversation and the activity/messaging soon ceases within 20 lines. Now I quit Weechat and rejoin the server/channel. Since the channel automatically replays the last 20 lines of messages for each user and there was no new activity since then, I am notified of the past messages as well.

I think there is a toggle to change the buffer to not notify of any messages from a specific channel, but that disables all notifications. What I am looking for, is that the script does not notify me if the channel serves X number of back messages and I was notified in that.

The main issue here is how to differentiate between old and new messages if all of them come at once (and hence all have the current date and time). If you find a way (e.g. the old messages have a certain tag or text by which they can be distinguished from the new messages), I can add an option into the script in case none of the existing options is suitable.
