Customize corods_to_fips query by year?

Would it be possible to add the ability to query by year to the coords_to_fips function?
Alternatively, are there build instructions somewhere such that I could download the appropriate year's TIGER/Line Shapefiles to compile my own year-specific function?

Ideally I'd like to map coordinates onto the counties present in 2013, and there have been several chances since then.

The primary issue preventing this is having to store the geometry for the county boundaries across years -- which would make the package infeasible for uploading to CRAN due to its size -- though it may be possible to handle this by picking a starting year and only storing that geometry + the differences in geometry/properties until the present (which may be good for future updates as well).

My current bandwidth for new features is a bit low currently, but I'll try to sketch up something to get this started. I like the idea and it has given me a new idea for keeping fipio updated with new Census changes!
