long term: node editor

eventually, I would like to see this turn into a sort of labview replacement, with a full-fledged GTK-based node editor. devices can have pointers in and pointers out, instead of there being a global state. i'm pretty sure we can allow for nonlinearity like this without sacrificing performance one bit
